So this is a group that has been gaining some pretty massive hype on youtube. And I’m here to…well…hype it even more! The duo, consisting of Corin Roddick and Megan James, first posted three of their tracks on the purity ring tumblr thepurityring.tumblr.com/ about a year ago. Recently, they have announced that they will be releasing an album on July 24th of this year. In celebration of this announcement, a new track entitled “Obedear” was unveiled. All I have to say is, Crystal Castles had better watch their back!
The charm in this group comes from the perfect blending of low-fi syncopated beats and the pitched vocal melodies of the lead singer. Thick but smooth bass lines grace every song and add an extra dimension that differentiates them from similar guy/girl duo electronic acts. Lyrically, Purity Ring is a very refreshing reminder that EDM can be very emotionally moving and poetic at times. According to Megan James, most of the lyrics are taken from diaries that she has written in since she was a child; which makes the group’s name rather fitting.
